Day two of the opening Ashes Test at Edgbaston has ended with Australia scoring 311-5 at stumps on Saturday.

Usman Khawaja (126) and Alex Carey (52) will resume batting for the Aussies on the third day.

Australia trail by 82 runs in the first innings.

Australia started the day while batting at 14-0 with the openers David Warner and Khawaja on the pitch.

However, Warner was bowled by Stuart Broad after just scoring nine runs. Broad removed the 36-year-old for the record 15th time.

Marnus Labuschagne walked back to the pavilion after a golden duck as Broad bagged his second wicket of the innings.

However, England’s biggest breakthrough came when Steve Smith, the hero of Ashes 2019 when he scored 774 runs at an average of 110, was removed by the English skipper Ben Stokes after scoring 16 off 59.

Australia were near to an early collapse as they had lost three wickets at just 67 runs in 26 overs, but an 81-run partnership by the middle-order batter Travis Head, who scored a half-century, and the left-handed opener Khawaja kept the Aussies in the hunt.

Khawaja completed an exceptional hundred as he became the star of the day for Australia. His unbeaten knock included 14 fours and two sixes.

However, Moeen Ali produced a moment of magic in the 67th over as he broke a 72-run partnership between Cameroon Green and Khawaja as the former was dismissed by a ripper from the off-spinner.

Earlier in the first innings on day one, Ben Stokes took the cricket world by surprise as he declared the innings at 393-8 with ton-up Joe Root still on the crease.

Joe Root remained unbeaten as he scored 118 runs courtesy of seven fours and four sixes.

England started the innings following their “Bazball” brand as Zack Crawley smashed Australian skipper Pat Cummins for a four on the first ball of the innings.

Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope headed back to the pavilion after scoring 12 and 34 runs respectively.

Harry Brook lost his wicket, after scoring 32 off 37 with four boundaries, in a bizarre way as Nathan Lyon's short-of-length delivery got extra bounce and hit Brook's thigh pad and then hit the wicket after staying in the air for some time.

However, Root hitting a reverse-scoop six to Scott Boland became the highlight of the first day.
